Gionee group of phones

Gionee is a Chinese smartphone brand that was once one of the largest mobile phone manufacturers in China. Gionee has expanded into various markets, including India, Nigeria, and other African countries.  The company has decent cameras, design, large batteries and affordability, as well as its association with BLU Products, a US-based company that sells rebadged Gionee phones in North America. However, Gionee also faced some challenges and controversies in recent years, such as bankruptcy, malware, and gambling scandals. In this blogpost, we will highlight some of the latest models and also discuss the history, pros and cons of choosing a Gionee phone.

Gionee group of phones: A review of the past and present:

Gionee is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer that was founded in 2002 in Shenzhen, Guangdong. It was one of China's largest mobile phone manufacturers, with a market share of 4.7% in China in 2012. It expanded into other markets, including India, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, the Philippines and Algeria. It also had an association with BLU Products, a cell phone manufacturer based in Miami, Florida, that sells many rebadged Gionee phones under their brand name in the United States and other North American markets.

Some of its notable products include the Gionee Elife S5.1, which was one of the thinnest smartphones in the world at the time of its release in 2014, the Gionee M2017, which had a massive 7000 mAh battery and a leather back cover, and the Gionee Max Pro, which featured a 6000 mAh battery and a 6.52-inch display.

In 2016, Gionee announced its plans to build a manufacturing plant in India and launched its first Made in India smartphone, the F103 model.

In 2018, Gionee faced financial troubles due to the alleged gambling losses of its chairman Liu Lirong and filed for bankruptcy liquidation.

The latest (2023) and most popular Gionee smartphones are:

  • F3 Pro (Flagship)
  • P50 Pro (Mid-range)
  • G13 Pro
S17 series (Premium);
  • S17
  • S17 Pro
The Gionee group of phones has many pros and cons that can be evaluated based on seven different criteria we've set as the standard for evaluating a phone's overall performance. These criteria include design, performance, camera, battery, price, software, and customer service.

Some of the pros of Gionee phones are:

  • They are relatively cheap compared to other brands with similar specifications, making them accessible to many people who want a smartphone. Gionee phones also have various models to suit different budgets and preferences.
  • They have large batteries that can last for long hours of usage without needing frequent charging.
  • They offer excellent camera performance, especially for selfies and portraits. Gionee phones have high-resolution sensors, advanced autofocus systems, ring-shaped LED flashes, and various modes and filters to enhance the photos.
  • They have some unique features, such as secondary displays and wireless charging, that are not common in other budget phones. They also offer attractive design and build quality, with slim bezels, curved edges, gradient colors, and glass or metal bodies. Gionee phones also have in-display fingerprint scanners, pop-up selfie cameras, or punch-hole cutouts to maximize the screen-to-body ratio.
  • They offer entertainment features, such as AMOLED displays, high refresh rates, HDR support, stereo speakers, headphone jacks, and dedicated gaming modes. Gionee phones also have smart features, such as Jovi AI assistant, Face Wake facial recognition, Smart Motion gestures, and Multi-Turbo acceleration.

Some of the cons of buying a Gionee phone are:

  • They have inconsistent software updates and security patches, which can expose them to bugs or malware. Gionee phones run on Funtouch OS or Origin OS, which are based on Android but have many customizations and bloatware. These OSes may not receive timely updates or support from Gionee or Google.
  • They have mediocre battery life and charging speed compared to some competitors. Gionee phones have average-sized batteries that may not last long under heavy usage. They also have fast charging support but not as fast as some other brands that offer wireless charging or reverse charging.
  • They may not have the best performance or user experience, as they use low-end or mid-range chipsets and operating systems.
  • They may not have the best after-sales service or customer support, as the company has faced financial troubles and legal issues in the past.
  • They have limited availability and service centers in some markets. Gionee phones are mainly sold in China, India, Southeast Asia, and some parts of Europe and Africa. They may not be easily available or serviced in other regions.
  • They have been involved in some scandals and controversies that may affect their reputation and customer trust. Gionee was found guilty of intentionally injecting malware into millions of phones in 2018. They've also been accused of copying other brands designs. The company also filed for bankruptcy in 2018 after its chairman lost over US$144 million to gambling .

Gionee is a smartphone brand that has been growing rapidly in the global market with its innovative products and features. Gionee offers various models for different segments of customers, such as the flagship F3 Pro series, the mid-range P50 series, and the premium S17 series. These phones have impressive cameras, displays, performance, design, and  entertainment features that make them stand out from the crowd. However, Gionee also has some drawbacks that may affect its reputation and customer satisfaction, such as inconsistent software updates, limited availability, mediocre battery life, and scandals. Therefore, customers should weigh the pros and cons of Gionee phones before making their purchase decision.
